WESTMORELAND SANITARY LANDFILL ON CUTTING EDGE OF BIOFUEL INDUSTRY

Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill is investing more than $10 million into a gas plant project that will literally turn trash into treasure. The plant siphons away pollutants from garbage that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere and converts it into natural gas used to power vehicles. Expected completion Fall 2019
BELLE VERNON MAN HIRED TO OVERSEE PORTION OF $10 MILLION GAS PLANT PROJECT
Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill has hired Ted Yowonske of T. Yowonske Enterprises, LLC to oversee connectivity for its $10 million gas plant project.
The idea of "cleaning" landfill gas is nothing but positive news for the environment.

AEROSPACE ENGINEER BRINGS AIRCRAFT TECHNOLOGY TO LANDFILL
Noble Environmental will soon be able to reduce greenhouse emissions from Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill by more than 90% thanks to similar technology being used on Boeing aircraft today. Charlie Anderson, an Aerospace Engineer from the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, designed what is called the Air Liquide process. Anderson began his career in aircraft fire and explosion protection research with the United States Air Force and Boeing. He helped to develop the use of gas membrane separation technology, which separates oxygen from the airspace above the aircraft’s fuel tank. The nitrogen that remains will not support combustion. “Every Boeing aircraft that you step into has a membrane element that helps to inert the fuel tank, and you’re a little safer because of that,” Anderson said.
That same membrane technology is now being used to separate methane from the gases emitted at landfills across the country. This innovation strips CO2 and other volatile organic components from the gas. The Air Liquide process is part of a $10 million dollar project that will improve greenhouse emissions by collecting landfill gas and converting it into valuable natural gas that will power natural gas vehicles.
